Gentle Reader...
Sometimes after spending a Conversation Afternoon with my own class, Scott's class would invite me to join their Conversation... which could often run late into the evening. One day, two students from his class came back to campus and picked me up, transporting me to Hong Feng Lake, almost an hour away. A lovely setting, with water, boats, mountains, and mahjong tables. Both of us learned to play mahjong, at least at the very elemental level. One of our students would always stand at our shoulder, offering us good advice about our next move.
By the way, the playing of mahjong has become "illegal" for those in Civil Service positions. This is a fairly new ruling by the government, designed to cut down on government corruption. Apparently, a great deal of betting goes on at some mahjong tables.
And , of course, after the Chinese BBQ, there was dinner. Indeed!
The longer we were in China, the more we began to run into people we already knew. My student Sinly happened to be at the lake that evening, so, as she said, the meeting was "a happy surprise."
The sky captured me as the evening arrived...
namaste,
